The merits of reciting sutras – Talk by Master Sheng Yen

Buddhist sutras are religious texts; they offer a way of life and a way to cultivate a peaceful mind. By reciting sutras and making it our regular practice, we will have a more peaceful body and mind. When people believe in religion, read the scriptures, and practice accordingly, they will naturally create works of literature, works of art, and develop the ability to appreciate art. Religion is a guideline for living, while art adds color to our life, which has a cultivating effect and makes our lives more refined. There’s no contradiction between the two.
