Buddhism 101: Four Immeasurables

Four sublime states of mind have been taught by the Buddha:

1. Loving-kindness (metta): wishing happiness for all sentient beings
2. Compassion (karuna): seeing the suffering of sentient beings and needing to do something about it
3. Sympathetic Joy (mudita): rejoicing in the accomplishments and virtues of sentient beings
4. Equanimity (upekkha): remaining stable and calm in the face of triumph and defeat, praise and blame, in regard to oneself and others
